growing up

How do the kids in the book grow up and change over the course of the novel?  What causes them to change so much?  Does Lee's depiction of growing up "ring true" according to your own life experiences?

The first part of the novel

The first part of the novel I felt was probably the most timeless, in terms of how I grew up 50 years after the time frame of the novel. I grew up so much like these two kids, what with the school fights, the obvious social class differences. the challenges to a kid's courage (touching Boo's house and trying to look in), having cantankerous siblings. All of their adventures, struggles, and experiences were similar to my childhood, except for the trial.
