Hosting a Book GroupI know of some book groups where the food is almost as important as the book. The group gathers for discussion, but they eat foods relating to the book at hand. And that sounds like a great deal of fun, if you can pull it all off. Indeed, when my group last met, I fully meant to make caipirinahas for our discussion of Mark Helprin's Memoir from Antproof Case. The book is partially set in Brazil, and this drink made with limes and cachaca is fabulous. Unfortunately, my supply of cachaca was woefully low, and I’m not sure where to get it locally. No matter. Our host had us for dinner, and she had some great wines. Usually, our group meets for dinner somewhere near the host’s home. This restaurant is the host’s choice. Then we go to her home around 6:45 for coffee, dessert and/or wine with our discussion. The host member is encouraged to keep refreshments simple, but those members who love to cook are always (happily) forgiven for indulging themselves and us. Be creative. I sent one of my war rugs along with a friend when her group discussed A Thousand Splendid Suns. They were planning to eat Afghani food while sitting on pillows on the floor. The rug, with its unusual yet strangely beautiful tanks, guns and grenade launchers, helped set a certain tone.
