Love Song
I believe that it is a love song for Atticus because throughout the novel, Scout is praising him. She tells the story from her point of view and how she sees her father. She sees him as having no flaws, and she feels that he is the best father there could be. I don't think that he is the ideal father in literature though because he makes poor choices as a father figure. For example, he hardly ever punishes his children when they need it, he simply tells them not to do something. Scout probably sees him as the best father because he never punishes her and she always sees him as a loving person. Although she sees him with no flaws, the other people in the community have a different opinion of him. They constantly criticize him for defending Tom Robinson, and even his own family considers it a disgrace to the family. Scout always stands up for her father and praises him for everything he does, and that is why this novel is a love song (from Scout) to Atticus Finch.
this subject box is completely unnecessary.
im not sure that i would call the book a love song to atticus, but more so maybe along the lines of a commemoration. as the book is telling of scout's childhood relationship with her father, scout does not fully understand him- she doesnt know him on any level beyond the man who holds the title as her father. if a love song, scout would really know him and understand him, but children arent necessarily always capapble of that kind of deeper love. however, scout very much admires and respects atticus for playing the role of her father in her life. she does love him, but this book is more so of an honoring to atticus, not a love song. as lee uses the other adult characters in the story to point out atticus' failings, we see that he is not the perfect father in literature, contrary to the views lee conveys through scout about atticus' fathering. Although, not perfect, this does not make atticus any less than exceptional. though he may not notice the smaller things, he knows what really counts and raises his children in truth.
To Kill a Mockingbird is a
To Kill a Mockingbird is a love song for Atticus Finch. Atticus
is the ideal father in literature. He is wise and self controlled. He
studies and reads constantly to attain knowledge. He has a respectable
job in practicing law, although he is persecuted for defending Tom
Robinson. This leads to his next positive attribute. He disgards the
opinons of others and manages his life based on his personal beleifs.
He does not beleive he will win the case however he continues to persue
it's cause. He is well balanced also. He is not only a scholarly
person. He used to be known as "One shot Finch." Atticus is open minded
when understanding the situations of others (for example when
explaining the sickness of Mrs. Dubose to Jem). Lee indirectly points
out Atticus' failings only through the eyes of others like Scout and
Jem. They describe him as old and unathletic (he did not paricipate in
the church fundraiser flag football game). He is also described as
wearing thick glasses. Although Jem and Scout describe him this way,
when they find out about his checker skills and marksmanship, they too
picture him like described above.
song of love?
I dont think someone should go as far as calling the entire novel a love song for Atticus Finch...because we do not have all that much information on him yet. Yes, the book does praise Atticus for his parental ways, and it has shown no flaws on his part thus far, but i feel that there is so much more to Atticus that we do not know. Jim's reaction when he found out about his father's shooting talent shows that his own children dont even know his past, or what lies hidden beneath his placid, and austere shell. Atticus is a mystery even to his own two kids, so I do not feel that the book (so far) is a love song for Atticus. He is portrayed as a perfect father figure, I believe, because he is always calm, and only acts out in rage when it is righteous anger. He does not spoil his children, yet they love and respect him so much for his character. He lets them figure out life on their own, and when they come to him for answers, he gives them wise, advice...
(Someone earlier said that the time when Atticus crushed his glasses after shooting the dog could be a symbol for the way the childrens views of Atticus had changed...I totally agree. )
Atticus
I can see how this book can be interpreted as a love song for Atticus Finch. From Scout's perspective, he is the best person she could imagine to be her father. Jem and Scout love and respect him. He does not even have to physically punish them when they disobey. Words are all it takes. Scout also focuses in on Atticus' humility. There are many amazing things that scout finds out in her life that she didn't even know about her father. For example, she didn't even know her dad could shoot a gun before the rabid dog incident. It turns out that Atticus had been the best shot in town when he was a kid. Also, Scout shows her fondness of her father reading to her every night. It seems that Atticus sometimes doesn't ever spend time with his kids, but this is a special time for him and Scout. So by these things, I can see how this is a love song For Atticus.
a love song...
I do believe that it is a love song for Atticus Finch, written by his daughter Scout. Throughout the pages there are examples of her praising him,and realizing what a wonderful father he is. She begins to appreciate him more and more. She learns more about him, and begins to see him as someone who is more than just a father. However, I agree with the people who have said that he has faults, and doesn't raise them perfectly. But I still think it is a love song. When you love someone, you accept that they have faults, and you love them more for them. I think this is an important part of what makes it a love song. Scout understands that her father isn't perfect, and didn't necessarily raise them the best way, but she loves him for who he is, and the way he influenced her. He taught her so much, and this book is a way of making her love and appreciation for him known. So yes, I do think this story is a love song to Atticus Finch.
Atticus:Dad::Modeling:Science
...when i first heard about this assignment i thought we were composing our own love song to Atticus, so i am disappointed... the theme of Atticus' perfection seems to be a major one. The Finch family seems to be near perfect. they have their shortcomings (being poor, etc.) as a family but they are always portrayed as making the most of their situation and doing the right thing. Atticus is greatly praised by Scout in the book, probably because the adult Scout is narrating. Atticus never loses his temper, is humble about his greatest talents, stands up for what he feels is morally right, loves his kids, and maintains their respect and compliance without ever having to harshly punish them. he is the epitome of "father knows best." when he makes Jem go read to Mrs. Dubose, there is an underlying reason. it is not just a punishment for Jem, it is teaching him valuble life lessons. to my knowledge, the book has not expressed any flaw in Atticus, except maybe that he is getting old.
Yes, i believe that Atticus is a perfect father figure in literature.
Magician?
Ok so yeah i think it is somewhat of a love song for senor Finch. Although the author repeatedly points out his faults, Atticus is always shown to be raising his children in a positive way, or at least as well as he can on his own. Harper Lee spent nearly an entire chapter dedicated to Scout viewing him as no big deal. However, i think that when he drops his glasses to the ground and kills the mad dog it reveals his courage and Scouts new view of him. The glasses may be a symbol of the old view of him breaking and Scout's new respect coming alive.
love song for Atticus
The book is a love song for Atticus because it shows his strength of character. It seems like he is an upright man in all ways, and Scout respects him even though she does not even fully understand the situation he is in. Lee only shows the positive attributes of Atticus. Some things about him are different, like defending a black man, but Lee does not present that or anything else so far as negative. He is the perfect father because he does not care what other people think, but he cares about what is right. He is willing to sacrifice for the sake of his conscience. Jem respects him strongly and does the best he can to obey him and please him. He lets the kids discover things for themselves and guides them through their thoughts when they are angry or upset. His gentleness and love for the kids is more effective discipline than yelling at them because they learn from what he has to say. He is fair when they get into trouble, listening to both sides of the story. He is a perfect father because Lee makes it seem like he always knows best.
love song
I think that this book could be a love song for Atticus Finch. Although he is far from the perfect father, Lee mentions several of his attributes. She portrays him as a strong fatherly figure that Jem and Scout are lucky to have. He has unique forms of discipline and always treats them equally. He always hopes and wishes the best for his children. He doesn't pour out his affections for them, yet they know he loves them and vice versa. Atticus is also a humble father. He does not brag about his abilities or talents, even though Scout and Jem are sometimes ashamed of having a boring father. Scout and Jem try to please thier father at all times, for he asks very little of them. However, Atticus always worries for his children and deeply cares for them and their future. Atticus does have flaws, yet Lee doesn't concentrate on them. Instead she praises his good qualities and points them out in her book several times.
Not Gonna Write You a Love Song...
I agree with Ben Watson. I think that Lee is greatly showing Atticus as a good father figure, but I don't think I would say it's a "love song" to him. I don't think he's the perfect father figure because I think he lets his kids get away with a lot and sometimes it seems like he keeps a lot from them. He's a very mysterious character to me. Like, you never can just know what he's thinking you kind of have to draw your own conclusions and then eventually Lee will put another character in to tell you what he was talking about. However, he teaches his kids a lot and for a single parent he seems to be raising them well. He's teaching them wrong from right and stops them in thier wrong-doing. If I did have to say this was a "love song" to him I would say it was so because he seems like a good person with less faults than other characters, but not the perfect father figure.
Love Song
This book is a love song for Atticus because the characters praise him whenever it is possible. Scout and Jem look up to him and go to him whenever they have a problem. They very rarely point out his failings, and if they do, it is about something minor. Atticus is not the perfect father, but he does his best. He knows he can not do everything by himself, so he has Calpurnia help him out some. He knows his children need a motherly figure, so he provides one as best he can. Jem and Scout always talk about how wise and great Atticus is. They meet him every day after work, and enjoy the time they get to spend with him. The only faults he seems to have are his age, his situation at home, and his choice of work. Other then those few things, Atticus seems to be loved by everyone and respected.
Reply
This book is a love song for Atticus Finch in that it portrays him as being the perfect father figure. Lee never points out that Atticus has shortcomings. He always is calm and never has to correct conflicts made by Scout and Jem by physical discipline. Scout and Jem love Atticus and, in most cases, obey him gladly when he tells them to do something. He is always a source of wisdom for his children; instead of physically disciplining them, he tells them how what they did was wrong and makes them actually think about what they have done. His wisdom could also related to the fact that he is an older father compared to the rest. When compared to Aunt Alexandra and Uncle Jack, he appears to be a better father figure. Even when he tries to impose Aunt Alexandra's teachings upon Scout and Jem one night, Scout is about to run away because she recognizes that it was not her father talking, but her aunt talking through her father. Atticus is the perfect father in literature because he can effectively raise his children and teach them values through communication and by talking situations out.
Love Song
I believe that To Kill A Mockingbird could be considered a love song for Atticus Finch because it does nothing but give him praise and highlight his good qualities and attributes. His children respect him very much and he teaches them great moral lessons. Even though some of his fellow townspeople and family members see him as a disgrace for defending a black man, Atticus keeps his head up and teaches his kids did do this also. The book never points out any of his failures but rather points out his great relationship with his kids and his kind heart towards others. Atticus could be considered the perfect father in liturature because he loves his children and shows love towards others. He doesn't punish his kids but uses a different method of getting them to respect him and want to obey and please him.
heres the deal i would not
heres the deal i would not go as far as to say that it is a love song but it does focuse greatly on ehis successes as a single father attempting to raise his children the best he can. his short comings are mentioned however when his brother and his sister mention the way he raises his children sayng he lets them get away with to much , and to some degree they are correct, but on the other hand he raises them in the way that he feels will prepare them best for life. o perhaps, atticus has no faults and perhaps he is the model character depending on how you view his raising of the children
LOVE SONG!
The book is a love song for Atticus because in all that I have read in the novel so far, it is always praising him. So far, I have not seen Lee present any negative aspects of Atticus. Even things that at first might seem negative, they are actually a positive. For example, Scout complains of how Atticus says he is too old to do some of the stuff other fathers do, but soon after she realizes that Atticus is actually an amzing role model and loves his kids more than anything. I would say that he might be the perfect father in literature. I know out of everything I've read so far, he seems to be the best father. He always loves and protects his kids and thinks before he says anything. He also stands up for what he thinks is right no matter what other people say. Overall, Atticus seems to be a very loving father, and Lee makes a point to show that love in the novel.
I think that this book could
I think that this book could be a love song for Atticus Finch because he is always seen as doing the right thing. For example, standing up for racial injustice. He always seems to not care what other people think about him and tell Scout and Jem not to get in fights that deal with him. Whenever Scout and Jem have any questions they know that they can ask their dad. The two kids are portraid as admiring their father for all of the things that he does. Jem even said that he wanted to be like his father when he grew up. Atticus is also seen as a very humble man in the novel. For example, his kids had no idea that their dad could shoot a gun, but they found out, when he was asked to shoot the crazy dog, that he used to be the best shot in the country.
Atticus is So Hood
I really have no idea how it is a love song for atticus other than that scout constantly displays her love for attticus thoughout the novel but Lee has yet to point out any of Atticus' failings so it seems. The only thing that might be negative about his character is that he doesn't discipline his children but even then his children respect and admire him more than any one else in their lives. He is a courageous man. He really loves his children and instills in them the same worldview that he has. He has a strong sense of right and wrong and is one of the reasons he is defending tom robinson. He is defending tom robinson even though everyone in the county of Maycomb thinks he is crazy for doing so. He and his children have taken alot of negative criticism for his stand. He is willing to defend Tom even though he knows he has no chance but he believes he must defend him. It would be morally wrong for him to not defend Tom.
Atticus Is Amazing!!
The way that Lee portrays Atticus does seem to suggest that she wants the reader to think of him very highly. He is incredibly respected by both Scout and Jem, and while maintaining a healthy fear of their father, they love him very dearly. While reading this story, one is very overwhelmed with a sense of revernce for Atticus. It is very admirable of him to stand up for Tom Robinson, even while he is persecuted by the members of his community. He stands up for what he believes in no matter what and people reading this story today maintain a high respect for this sort of behavior. Along with this, Lee hardly ever portrays Atticus in a negative light. It is always one of the neighbors or Aunty who looks like the bad guy, therefore I think every person reading this book is going to favor his actions and decisions. This book clearly proclaims that Atticus is an incredible father, and Lee does an incredible job of making her readers fall in love with this character.
Love Song
Harper Lee's To Kill a Mockingbird can be considered a love song for Scout's father Atticus because of several important reasons. Firstly, the book never mentions Atticus ever disciplining his children harshly, and he always seems to speak to them as equals instead of children. Both Jem and Scout have nothing but praise for their father, defend him visciously whenever he is mocked, and hold him in the highest respect even though he is not like the other fathers in Maycomb. Secondly, the book shows how Atticus goes to great lengths to protect his children. For instance, neither of them knew that back in his day he was known as "One-shot Finch" and was the greatest marksman in Maycomb. He is very humble about it when the children find out. Another example of Atticus's protection of his children is when he is forced to shoot the crazed dog. Atticus instructs his children to go inside so they dont witness him shooting the dog. He realizes that witnessing this act would harm them emotionally, and therefore prevnts that from happening. Finally, and most importantly, the book also demonstrates Atticus's courage, and can be called a love song for this. Atticus exemplified courage in the way that he defended the Negroe Tom Robinson in court even though he knew the backlash and hate he would receive from his community in return. He risked his very life to do what he knew was right, and because he knew he couldnt face his children with a clear conscience if he didint. As Atticus says to scouts Uncle Jack: "But could I face my children otherwise?"
Love Song
To Kill a Mockingbird in many ways is a love song for Atticus Finch. The narrator, Scout, speaks many times about respecting Atticus and knowing that he did the best for them. One night Scout was listening in on Atticus and Uncle Jack's conversation. Towards the end of it, Atticus calls out and tells her to go to bed. She then says "but i never figured out how Atticus knew I was listening, and it was not until many years later that I realized he wanted me to hear every word he said." She respected him for that. Even Jem was willing to risk getting shot instead of making Atticus disappointed. They both wanted to please their father, which shows that they held him in the highest estem. I have not seen Lee point out any of Atticus' failings. At one point, Jem feels that Atticus has a failing because he cannot play football, but he soon changes his mind when he finds out that Atticus' nickname was "one-shot Finch." And although he may not be the 'best' at raising children, he loves them whole heartedly and does the best he can. He may not be the "perfect father," but he puts in the effort that is required. He is a great example of good morals for his children, and he teaches them not to judge others. In Scout and Jem's eyes he is the perfect father.
The novel can be considered
The novel can be considered a love song for Atticus Finch because it really never points out any of his faults and it seems to highlight his strengths as a father. The book never mentions him getting angry at his children and he never loses his temper, even when dealing with people that he knows consider him a "nigger-lover." He doesn't like shooting guns and is very humble about his considerable skill in marksmanship. He treats his children as equals, respects them and their opinions, and listens the their side of the story. He teaches them many important lessons, such as how to be a gentleman for Jem and how to look at life from other people's perspectives for Scout. Lee does not point out any of Atticus' failings in the book. I think that Atticus is the perfect father in literature. So far in the novel, he has not done or said anything to prove him otherwise.
Love Song for Atticus Finch
I think that this book is a love song for Atticus in many different ways. First of all, Scout and Jem really look up to their father. They are eager to defend him when the people of Maycomb criticize him because he has undertaken Tom Robinson's case. Scout believes that her father can do no wrong and that he would only act in this manner if he believed it to be just. She respects her father's decision, although she does not completely understand the reasons behind this. The reader realizes that Atticus has the courage to do what's right no matter what gets in his way, even the fear of defeat. Harper Lee does not point out any of his failings, although Scout wishes Atticus were able to play in the baseball games between the Baptists and the Methodists or do something that she considers "exciting." When she sees that her father can shoot a gun well, she wants to tell everyone about it because she is proud of her father and his accomplishments. However, she restrains herself because Jem tells her that Atticus must have had a good reason for not telling Scout and Jem about his past achievements. She does not want to hurt Atticus. Atticus is a very good father to Scout and Jem. Although his wife's death when the children were still very young would normally impair his parenting skills, he actually uses great wisdom in disciplining his children. His methods of parenting actually are very efficient. He finds threatening them with punishment to usually be enough, and Jem and Scout respect him and try to please him. For example, Jem risks being shot to retrieve his pants so that his father will not be disappointed in him. He lets Scout and Jem try things on their own, knowing that they will just have to learn in their own time; he respects them and expects that they will do what's right on their own. Because of these things, Atticus is very close to Scout and Jem and in many ways represents the perfect father of literature.
To Kill a Mockingbird can be
To Kill a Mockingbird can be portrayed as a love song for Atticus Finch for many reasons. Jem and Scout think fondly and have great respect for their father, Atticus. They are always waiting for him every night and they respect him very much. You can see their love and affection for their father throughout the book. Harper Lee does not point out any of Atticus' failings. The only time the children talk bad about their father is when they are upset that he can't play football like the other kids' fathers. I don't think that Atticus is the perfect father but he does a very good job at raising them the best he can, without a wife. People are always hounding on him to raise his children differently but the way he is raising them is working and they want to please him.
To Kill A Mockingbird can be
To Kill A Mockingbird can be viewed as a love song for Atticus Finch in multiple ways. For one, I believe that the story is a song of love for one's father. Lee introduces Atticus' parenting techniques to the reader as well as Jem and Scout's positive responses to their father's methods. His disciplinary methods are somewhat unorthodox but effective, and in return his kids treat him with respect. Every day Jem and Scout wait for their father to come home, and they obey him out of the desire to want to make him proud, not out of fear of him. Not only do his children love him, but the people of Maycomb also treat him with respect. Despite select few who are against his current defense case, many view him as a respectable, hard-working man. Atticus Finch is admired by his family and his neighbors.
