Please join us for this 1932 film noir of the Pre-Code era which tells the story of gang warfare and police intervention when rival gangs fight over control of a city. The film stars Paul Muni and is loosely based on the life of Al Capone. Although completed in 1931, censors would not allow its release until 1932, because of concerns that it glorified the gangster lifestyle and showed too much violence. A popular remake of this film was made in the 1980’s starring Al Pacino.

The owner of the Sears department stores funded the Rosenwald Schools for the education of rural African-American children living in the South. Historian and preservationist Dorothy Walker will discuss the history of these schools and today's efforts to save the few surviving buildings.

This film stars Jean Harlow (wearing a red wig) as a young woman who seduces her boss (played by Chester Morris) and convinces him to divorce his wife. She soon tires of him, and embarks on an affair with a wealthy businessman. Accused of murder, she escapes prosecution and flees to France where she embarks on another affair, with a chauffeur (played by Charles Boyer in one of his earliest Hollywood roles).
