As part of THE BIG READ celebration, please join us for a Film Festival celebrating the films of the Pre-Code era. Pre-Code films were created before the Motion Picture Production Code took effect on July 1, 1934 in the US. Our first movie is a 1931 classic Pre-Code film which tells the story of an alcoholic defense attorney (Lionel Barrymore, won the 1931 Academy Award for Best Actor for his role) who must defend his daughter's ex-boyfriend (Leslie Howard) on a charge of murdering the mobster (Clark Gable, in his breakout role) his daughter (Norma Shearer) had become the mistress of; a mobster whom her father had previously gotten an acquittal for on a murder charge. This film marks the first screen appearance together of the future Ashley Wilkes and Rhett Butler.
