One Page At A Time

As I think about the impact the book To Kill A Mockingbird has made on my life, I remember the mocking I have seen in my own life.

I remember how my mother would always say to me. "Life is not always fair, Kevin, but it will often be good."

I am reminded about how my mother cries every time she sees the scene in the movie To Kill A Mockingbird where Atticus Finch leaves the courtroom, defeated at the first battle with the law.

Atticus represented an innocent man accused of a crime he did not committ yet this black man was found guilty by an all white jury. Is there no justice in this world? Even now?

The African-American members seated, due to segregation and Jim Crow laws, all at the top of the courthouse, stand at attention as Atticus leaves, no doubt disappointed at the jury verdict-- but determined to keep fighting.

Stand up, Scout.

Your father's passing.

That passage even makes me cry.

And it reminds me a little of this song by the Who that was in my mother's record collection. She had it all on vinyl back in the day and I picked it up and loved it due to her.

Lover:
Got a feeling '21
Is going to be a good year,
Especially if you and me
See it in together.

Father:
So you think '21
Is going to be a good year?
It could be good for me and her,
But you and her - no, never!
I had no reason to be over optimistic,
But somehow, when you smiled
I could brave bad weather...

Mother:
What about the boy?
What about the boy?
What about the boy?
He saw it all!

Mother & Father:
You didn't hear it.

You didn't see it.
You won't say nothing to no-one
Ever in your life.
You never heard it.
Oh, how absurd it all seems
Without any proof.
You didn't hear it.
You didn't see it.
You never heard it - not a word of it!
You won't say nothing to no-one,
Never tell a soul
What you know is the Truth.

Father:

Got a feeling '21
Is going to be a good year,
Especially if you and me
See it in together.
Got a feeling '21
Is going to be a good year,
Especially if you and me
See it in together.
I had no reason to be over-optimistic,
But somehow, when you smiled, I could brave bad weather...

Mother:

What about the boy?...
